Float
Float
Image 1 The total number of outstanding shares available to the public for buying. This is the number of freely traded shares in the hands of the public. Float is calculated as Shares Outstanding minus Shares Owned by Insiders, 5% Owners, and Rule 144 Shares.
Image 2 A company may have 10 million outstanding shares but only 7 million are trading on the stock market...7 million would be the floatation. Stocks with small floats (under 3 million shares) tend to be a lot more volatile than others.
